Opulence Glaze Helpful Hints and Suggestions

Opulence Glaze is proudly manufactured by Mid-South Ceramic Supply in Nashville, TN. Since 1992 we have provided quality glaze, service and support to our customers and distributors. All Opulence Glazes are lead and barium free, food safe, dishwasher safe and microwave safe. In liquid form, Opulence Glazes can be dipped, poured, sprayed or brushed without the addition of deflocculants, binders, etc. They come in a variety of effects which are listed below.
There are four lines of C/6 Opulence Glazes:

Gloss Line – numbered 100 through 599
These glazes colorful, glossy glazes show the best result with a slow, gradual dip. They are not prone to flow or move.

MIXING: 5 lbs – mix with 4.5 lbs of water. Sieve through 80 mesh screen.

25 lbs – mix with 22.5 lbs of water. Sieve through 80 mesh screen.

                   Suggested Specific Gravity 150-152

Reduction Look – numbered 600-699
The biggest variation in color and effect is within this glossy group, which also brings varied application procedures. Reduction glazes are formulated to form a gas or wood fired look in a C/6 electric kiln and break into secondary colors. Thicker glazes such as Blue Odyssey-625, Cherry Blossom-620, and Galaxy-617 only need one quick dip. In contrast, glazes that flow more fluidly like Sea Spray-607, Pebble Beach-608, or Plum-628 can be dipped at a slower pace and even benefit from an accented second dip (half way down the pot). Reduction glazes pair extremely well as accents on top of Gloss, EnviroColor, or Translucent glazes. All of the glazes in thsi group run the risk of flowing off the pot if two Reduction glazes are layered too closely to the bottom.

MIXING: 5 lbs – mix with 4.25 lbs of water. Sieve through an 80 mesh screen.

25 lbs – mix with 21.5 lbs of water. Sieve through an 80 mesh screen.

                   Suggested Specific Gravity 154-156

EnviroColors – numbered 800-899

Glazes in this group display a unique contrast of sheen and matte effect. Because of the chemical makeup of these glazes, it is extremely important that you stir between each application. The chemicals responsible for the beautiful effects tend to settle near the bottom, so make sure that you stir in a circular and scooping motion from the bottom toward the top. (If using a pint, shaking is sufficient). When applied alone, these glazes are not prone to flow or move.

                   Suggested Specific Gravity 152-154

Our Newest Line: Translucent– numbered 900-999

A lighter clay body shows the colors of these glazes the best. A slower dip or double dip will result in a deeper effect. For example, Tiger’s Eye-964 displays an amber accent with a quicker dip and a slower dip brings a darker brown. These glazes pair well when applied UNDER glazes from other groups. Translucent glazes are not prone to slow or move.

  • Opulence Glazes are thicker than most glazes and are therefore more forgiving before fired. They can be rubbed, sanded and scraped without adverse affects.
  • In liquid form, Opulence Glazes can be dipped, poured, sprayed or brushed without the addition of deflocculants, binders, etc.
  • Opulence Glazes are compatible and may be blended by volume or weight to create an infinite variety of colors, shades and effects. Example: equal parts 605 and 600 make a nice flow blue. Of course we recommend testing any combination to assure good results.
  • You can create your own C/6 glaze colors by mixing stains or raw colorants to: 125 Clear, 346 Gloss White, 510 Matte Semi-Translucent, or 513 Matte Opaque.
  • By Overlapping any Reduction Look 600 series over any Basic or EnviroColors glaze you can achieve nice flow and movement. We recommend that this overlap not be used too close to the bottom due to this nice flow.
  • Our best-selling glazes that produce some great effects over or under other glazes are: 600 Antique Iron, 601 Autumn Frost, 607 Sea Spray, 815 Bamboo, 620 Cherry Blossom
  • All Opulence Glazes are Lead and Barium Free, Food Safe, Dishwasher Safe and Microwave Safe.
  • Although Opulence Glazes were designed for C/6 electric firing, customers have reported successful results in gas or wood kiln as well as at various temperatures and conditions. We do recommend thorough testing under your circumstances to assure good results.
